Orthodontics for adults: Benefits last a lifetime

When April Heim's older teenaged kids, Bobby, Jr., and Brittany got braces in 2009, April began to consider the option for herself.

A realtor and associate broker in Stevensville, Md., Heim, 44, had noticed her canines were starting to turn out in her upper bite. "I got more conscious of my own smile," she says. So she asked herself, "It's such an easy fix, why don't I get them done?"

Finally, last September at the age of 43, April decided to take the plunge, wearing braces for about nine months.

"I'm in a business involving a lot of face-to-face meetings. I'm a Million Dollar agent," April says. She wanted a smile to match.

Heim isn't alone. In the past twenty years, an increasing number of adults have been signing up for orthodontic treatments.
