Maryland has a long history with boats on the Bay. Whether it be sailing a boat or making a boat or a sail, boats are an essential part of the Chesapeake Bay experience.

When a 14-year-old John Harris built his first boat, it would have been hard to imagine that years later he would run a multi-million dollar do-it-yourself boat-building company.
But standing here now, in a space filled with assembled boats that he designed—row boats and sail boats, Kayaks and surfboards, boats racked up and down the walls, boats suspended from the ceiling and boats lining the narrow walkways through the store—is a man who became his dream.
“I always envisioned myself as a boat builder,” said the 40-year-old Harris on a daytime tour through Chesapeake Light Craft’s showroom and workspace in Annapolis. Ever since that first project—a simple row boat—he’s been “addicted to every aspect of the process.” But it’s taken much hard work and gumption to get to where he is today; that same novice boat builder all those years ago had so much to learn.

Chestertown, Maryland, resident J
ohn “Jack” Brosius never aspired to be an Olympian. Nor could he imagine the decades of coaching that would bring him so much satisfaction in the years that followed one fateful day in 1962.
“It was Easter Sunday, and a buddy of mine from Catholic University invited me to come paddling on the Potomac River. I just wanted to go fishing,” he reflects.
What Brosius didn’t realize was that this trip would be his baptism into a life of canoeing and kayaking.
