Now through Aug. 26, Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center presents "Treasured: honoring precious and vanishing worlds," a superb collection of art that reveals the beauty and vulnerability of the threatened, from disappearing plant and animal species, to vanishing languages, customs, and cultures, to vulnerable ecosystems, this unique collection of works highlights the intricacies and fragility of precious and vanishing worlds.
Exhibition jurors, Dr. Joshua A. Bell, curator of Globalization at the National Museum of History, Smithsonian Institution, and Lisa Scheer, professor of Art at St. Mary's College of Maryland, chose 50 diverse works, including installations, paintings, photography, collages, and sculptures for this exhibit. According to Bell and Scheer, "he impulse to make art is, at its core, a way to fix things (or feelings) in time, to preserve from loss that which is important, to capture something before it vanishes and to reach out through time to touch those that will come later."
Meet the artists
Italian born artist, who now resides in New Jersey, Riccardo Berlingeri creates organic installations by cutting squares from the New York Times that are held together with Elmer's glue. Sasha Zhitneva, who also resides in New Jersey, is an internationally recognized, award winning designer, who has been working with glass since 1995; Zhitneva's work brings together materials that are not usually considered compatible, such as fragments of medieval stained glass and disposal plastic. Whilst the artists within the Treasured exhibit are varied, all have been able, 'to capture an image as a way to visually retain what is precious while others physically retain by making their artworks from the very things they want to preserve.'
A special reception for Treasured, called Art Blooms Gala Reception, will take place on Friday, July 13, 6-10 p.m. Art Blooms is a fund-raising event that Annmarie Garden undertakes with the Calvert Garden Club for which a floral designer is paired with a work of art from the exhibit. The floral designers will create arrangements inspired by the works from the Treasured exhibit. The opening reception will include wine, light hors d'oeuvres, and live music. The sculpture garden will remain open with extended hours, taking full advantage of the exceptional venue. Each Treasured artist will enjoy complimentary admission to the Gala. All other guests will be asked to purchase a ticket (a discount will be given to spouses/significant others of each artist). All proceeds from the Art Blooms Gala will fund Annmarie Garden's new program, the artLAB!
