Temple Cone is an associate professor of English at the U.S. Naval Academy, and the author of three books of poetry. He was kind enough share this poem, called "Falconry" for the June 2012 issue of Chesapeake TASTE.
The dead fly from our hands
the way trained falcons do,
the kick of departure
echoing in the wrist
no matter how heavy the glove.
Only when we stand in a meadow,
sun shimmering over long grass,
does the training come clear:
the hoods of darkness they learn to wear,
the brilliance when the cloth's removed,
the piercing weight we lift
level with our eyes
and fling out
with a gesture of scattering seed.
